The organic food movement grew out of the seeds of thought that action needed to be taken to save the environment and protect our children from the overuse of toxic chemicals. Organic farming was spurred on by the "Back to the Land" movement. The belief was that living simply and using sustainable farming techniques would be better for people and the planet and create a safe and reliable food supply for the future. Axis Natural Foods was a Maine pioneer in the organic farming movement and the purveying of natural products.
In 1970, Peggy and Ken Schuler opened Axis in a small storefront in Lewiston. In the early years, Peggy and Ken sold eggs and vegetables from their organic farm in Hartford, where they raised chickens, horses, and cows. The store has expanded and moved several times over the years, and Axis has been a continous and vital part of Lewiston/Auburn community. Axis moved into its current location at 120 Center Street Plaza in Auburn in 2010.
